The Department of Human Genetics is the youngest basic science department in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. When the Department was launched just prior to the sequencing of the human genome, it was clear that the practice of genetics research would be forever changed by the infusion of massive amounts of new data. Organizing and making sense of this genomic data is one of the greatest scientific challenges ever faced by mankind. The knowledge generated will ultimately transform medicine through patient-specific treatments and prevention strategies.

The Department of Physiology is a basic science department in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA that was founded in 1952. Physiology is the study of how living systems function, through a comprehensive approach that builds upon fundamental principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. The overarching goal is to understand the processes by which molecules, cells, and organs interact to maintain vitality and good health. The Department has a rich history of landmark discoveries in membrane transport, ion channel biophysics, membrane receptors, contractility, and the electrophysiology of nerve, muscle and heart. In recent years, our faculty have expanded upon this foundation to develop a diverse portfolio of research programs.
An intergal piece of not only clinical care, but also research and education, the clinical departments cross many areas. Comprised of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, and the UCLA Medical Group with its wide-reaching system of primary-care and specialty-care offices throughout the region, UCLA Health is among the most comprehensive and advanced healthcare systems in the world. With it’s close proximity to the UCLA Health facilities, the David Geffen School of Medicine offers it’s students and trainees a unique educational experience.
