Main Dentist Services

1. Dental Checkups and Teeth Cleaning

Usually there are two parts to your dental checkups; the examination and the professional cleaning. We usually take x-rays once each year to detect any cavities between your teeth. Our dentists in Whittier will also check for plaque and tartar on the surface of your teeth.
Most dentists recommend twice each year profession cleaning and checkups to remove any buildup of plaque and halt any developing problems before they get worse. Some people who have more serious oral health issues may require more frequent visits.

2. Teeth Fillings And Repairs

Most tooth decay can be treated with a filling. Those who have tooth decay that get annual check-ups are more likely to need a filling than a root canal. Above gum disease, tooth decay seems to be the most common culprit for oral disease.

A filling requires restorative material. Porcelain is the most common material used as it closely matches the color of the tooth. Dentists are more likely to use silver amalgam on cavities in baby teeth. It is cheaper and the child will lose the tooth anyway.

The cavity is corrected by drilling out the decay with a dental tool. Most patients receive Novocaine or another local anesthetic before the procedure to numb the mouth. Novocaine becomes optional when a patient has a small cavity as these can typically be filled with little pain. The filling is then gently put into the hole the drill created. A special light is then used to harden the material.

3. Dental Crowns and Caps

Crowns and caps are commonly installed for two reasons. They are used after a root canal is done to restore the look and function of the tooth or to fix a tooth that has been chipped. Dental crowns and caps are most commonly made from porcelain. Our dentist will take a mold of the tooth and then send it to a manufacturer who will make a permanent copy of it that your dentists will install. We will then place it over the impaired tooth with cement on it to make it adhere. A special light will be used to bind the crown and tooth together. It isn’t uncommon for the dentists to have to shape the tooth or crown a little to make it a perfect fit.

4. Root Canals

A patient who fails to have a cavity corrected may need a root canal. Our dentists will use tools to remove the pulp and nerve of the tooth that is located in the root of the tooth. The space is then filled and sealed. Patients are fitted with a temporary crown and come back in a few weeks to get a permanent one.

5. Tooth Extractions

Extractions are done when the tooth cannot be saved. On occasion, permanent teeth may need to be removed to have an orthodontic procedure.

A dentist may give general anesthesia as this procedure is pretty invasive. A dentists will have to cut away some of the gum and bone tissue that covers the tooth. Then, forceps are used to remove the tooth completely. It is done gently by rocking the tooth back and forth. It’s similar to the way that a child pools out a baby tooth. Some patients choose to get a dental implant to replace the missing tooth. Others choose to get dentures.

6. Teeth Whitening

Dentists also perform a lot of cosmetic procedures. The most common is teeth whitening. A protective layer of gel is placed over the teeth. A rubber shield is placed to protect the gums. Then, bleach is placed on the teeth and often left for twenty minutes to an hour. It should not hurt if you have no dental problems.

Many Other Procedures

Our Whittier dentist has a lot of weapons in their arsenal to help heal the dental problems people develop. Dentists also perform implants, place sealants and dentures, bond teeth, and place bridges. Call our office to see if you need any of these procedures and learn more about cosmetic ones.

Dental Implants Center

The result will be a permanent very natural looking tooth that functions normally. This is part of cosmetic dentistry and creating beautiful smiles. Why Are Dental Implants Important?

If you are a family member has a severely damaged tooth or are missing a tooth it’s important you get a replacement tooth so your teeth don’t start to shift causing even more problems with tooth alignment or even flossing and properly cleaning your teeth. They have really improved over the last 10 years and act just like a natural tooth. Dr Winston is highly qualified and skilled. Come and get a free consultation at our clinic.

Tips for GREAT Dental Health

If you want to live a quality life in Whittier and surrounding communities, you must develop good daily habits. We created the 6 minute solution to a good healthy mouth. Start with brushing twice a day and flossing after your last meal of the day. You can even floss during your favorite evening TV show so you don’t forget. Electric toothbrushes are wonderful and with their small head you will be more able to reach those hard to reach areas in the back of your mouth. Use a soft toothbrush with light to medium pressure. This way you will be gentle on your gums and your teeth enamel. Rinse with a good mouth wash for 30 seconds after you floss will help you wash away the bad bacteria that live between your teeth.

Six Minute Solution For Healthy Gums and Teeth

So with the 6 minute solution you will brush for 2 minutes twice a day and floss for one minute. Then you will rinse for 30 seconds for a total of about 6 minutes. This will be one of the best investments of time and energy you can give your body. It’s a gift from you to your body.

What a major difference 6 minutes a day can make. Everyone has 6 minutes to give to themselves for good quality oral health. Your mouth and body will thank you for this by staying healthy in almost all cases. Of course you will still need to see us twice a year for an examination and to complete the total cleaning process. We are most happy when you leave our office happy with healthy mouth and a healthy smile. If you need a dentist in Whittier, La Habra, or La Mirada we are just a very short drive for you.
